Network Marketing as a Career for Boomer Women
Statistics for older woman in America are staggering. For the first time in American history, more than 50% of women aged 50 and over are unmarried, due to life choices, divorce, or widowhood.
According to the UN Second World Assembly on Aging “Nations of the world face challenges of helping aging women attain economic security and promoting the productive potential of women as they grow old.”
About 30 percent of non-institutionalized older persons live alone (7.7 million women and 2.9 million men). Since 1963, the wage gap has narrowed only one-third of a penny per year. At the current rate of change, the wage gap will not be eliminated until 2039.
In the United States, approximately 70% of older households have annual incomes below $35,000. Almost 30% of these households have incomes between $10,000 and $20,000. The highest rates of poverty are found among older, single women, a category that includes widows and divorced women as well as those who have never married. In 2004 the average income for a single woman over 65 was $9,430 and 3.4 million Americans 65 and over lived below the poverty line. Seventy-one percent of them were women. For one of four of these women, Social Security was their only source of income. Declining stock prices have pushed many pension plans into a deficit and undermined the value of the IRA.
These statistics and more lead to one conclusion: the older woman needs a secondary source of income to support herself in her golden years. Instead of greeting at Wal-Mart or slinging burgers at McDonald’s, network marketing allows the perfect solution to this growing crisis. A network marketing business can be started with a very small investment. As nurturers, women are more comfortable in helping others to succeed. Her parenting skills are valuable when leading teams.
The number of women-owned businesses in this country grew at twice the rate of all firms between 1997 and 2002, jumping 14 percent, according the Center for Women’s Business Research. Nearly half of all small businesses are owned by women. There has never been a better time for women of all ages to get involved in network marketing.
